Darley did a lot of illustrations for southern authors. Much of these can be found on  “DOCUMENTING THE AMERICAN SOUTH: THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA'S BOOKS WITH DARLEY ILLUSTRATIONS: This web site is by the Academic Affairs Library, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, all rights reserved. • NOTES ABOUT “STOWE,” “FIRESIDE,” “UNCLE TOM” “SLAVERY”

FROM: Carol Digel Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2001 15:44:59 EDT Subject: Darley Picture To: WOO65@aol.com CC: GStanislow@brandywine.org

I have a book called Southern Life: or inside Views of Slavery. Under the illustration on the cover is the name Darley. Do you know if this is an F.O.C. Darley illustration? The book was published by Martin, Harrison & Co., New York and the author of the book was Harriet B Stowe and do you know when this book was published? >>

My records show a book called LIFE IN THE SOUTH, A COMPANION TO UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, by Calvin H. Wiley. Philadelphia, T.B. Peterson [1852] Wood engravings: 14 plates. In Sartain's Magazine, Mar-Dec 1849, entitled: ROANOKE; OR, WHERE IS UTOPIA? English edition: ADVENTURES OF OLD DAN TUCKER, London, Willoughby [1851] Darley also illustrated OLD TOWN FIRESIDE STORIES, by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Boston, James R. Osgood, 1872. 1 plate after Darley. The picture you refer to is certainly by F.O.C. Darley.
