Members of the Darley Society, DNREC representatives, and visitors at Fort Delaware celebrated DARLEY DAY IN DELAWARE at the Fort on Saturday, June 22, 2002.
The focus of the comemoration of Darley's birthday, June 22, 1821, was the presentation of a Darley Civil War print to the Fort.
About sixty persons witnessed the twenty minute ceremony. The print was hung in the Commandant's office and will be used in the Fort's interpretive tours.
DNREC Secretary, Nicholas DiPasquale received the print from the Society's Executive Director, Ray Hester. Mistress of ceremonies was Society President, Frances West, Esq.
After the presentation and tours of the fort, the entourage continued the celebration with a reception on the deck of the Canal Inn in Delaware City.
The print, BATTLE NEAR MILL CREEK (KY) in 1862 depicted the first significant win by Union forces and it was the battle where the Fort's fifth General, Brig. Gen. Schoef, had distinquished himself.
After the Mill Creek battle, the General was promoted to Commandant at the Fort in 1863 where he oversaw up to 10,000 Confederate prisoners of war.
It was a great day ... perfect weather, excellent attendance, and fun. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FELIX.
A SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL THE DNREC FOLKS WHO MADE THIS HAPPEN, from bottom to top! Specific thanks go to David Rickman, Lee Jennings, and Frances West for the "real" work.
Below are a few of the photos of the event; depending on the speed of your "modem," loading could take several minutes ... take a break, come back in a few minutes and view ALL the photos.
